Most of us do not understand the importance of energy until they are outside, as in the recent Black-Out, or campsite or in a thunderstorm. Civilizations before us did not have such beautiful light switches and power immediately. Many still do not. We are very privileged in this regard. Think about everyday things you do, you need energy and how important is your life.the flow of energy has always been important to advanced civilization. The ancient Egyptians used people power. The elephants used to move things, and even in battle.
The waterwheel was used as early as 4000 BC power. Steam engines are much newer. Animals, water and many other improvised methods allowed for the machines. Simplification of life, from agriculture to water pumps for windmills, etc. By freeing up the time needed for life, humanity is able to use that extra time to increase his power of mind and well with other inventions, and develops. Now, quickly to the modern world, often taken for granted our power, until, of course, is off by a black out. What we see as the difficulties that ultimately other third world countries do not have.
