California Camping : Montana De Oro – A Hidden California Treasure

One of California’s hidden jewels is Montana De Oro State Beach. Situated on the Central Coast just miles from the town of San Luis Obispo, it’s a great local for hiking, camping, and exploring the rugged coastline. Sorry to you surfers out there. The waves would be great to ride, but smashing into the rocks would be less glamorous. Not to fear, just 10 miles north lies Morro Strand State Beach and Pismo Beach is just a few miles south. However, there is a small stretch of sand at Montona De Oro State Park perfect for basking in the sun and enjoying nature.

Speaking of nature, it abounds here in droves. Sea lions, starfish, sea urchens, crabs, otters, birds, and whales are just a few of the creatures you can witness here. Another animal you we see a lot of are humans, and for good reason! It’s absolutely beautiful!

Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to escape the crowds. One great option is to hike up Valencia Peak for a panoramic view of the ocean and surrounding towns. It’s a good 5 mile hike but well worth the effort. Sorry if you are feeling lazy, if you really want to see what the state park offers you will have to work.

Cars are not allowed up the trail. However, you can bike up the trail if you wish. No, not motorcylces silly! I’m talking about the kind you pedal.

Valenica Peak isn’t the only hike available. This state park gives you plenty, california camping, of options to explore the area. My favorite area is south of the main beach along the 50 foot cliffs that overlook the ocean. Not only is the view incredible but jumping off them into, california camping, the water below is just as fun.

Just kidding. I had you for a second didn’t I? While you can’t jump off the cliffs, adventurous types can hike down them, but be careful! It’s a long way down. At the bottom of these cliffs lie a few hidden beach perfect for sightseeing and taking in nature. So what are you waiting for? Get off your couch, put down those potato chips, and head over to Montanta De Oro State Park. You won’t regret I told you so.
